What Causes Mold in Virginia Beach and Surrounding Areas Homes?
Virginia Beach and surrounding Hampton Roads cities are particularly susceptible to mold. At Hampton Roads Downsizing, we have encountered mold on multiple occasions. In each case, the mold was easily preventable. Unfortunately, each case necessitated that we dispose of potentially valuable items in the homes.
The Most Common Mold Sources
Common mold sources are almost exclusively related to the presence of moisture in the environment. Typical causes include leaks, often from pipes, windows, and the roof. The presence of condensation of any type can contribute to mold. Wet areas on carpets, drywall, and food, if left unchecked, may bring mold. Likely locations will be in the bathroom, under sink cabinets, and attics.
Does Humidity Cause Mold?
Mold thrives in environments where moisture is abundant. During the summer, higher temperatures and increased humidity create the perfect conditions for mold to grow and spread, as levels of relative humidity exceed 60%. Optimal indoor humidity is around 40%. The more water vapor there is in the air, the easier it is for mold spores to absorb moisture and start growing.
Why Coastal Environments Increase Mold Problems
In coastal environments like ours in Hampton Roads, we must be attentive to the possibility of mold growth. Virginia Beach has a humid subtropical climate. We should expect significant humidity year-round due to our proximity to the ocean and bay. December and January see higher humidity (around 67-82%), while July is slightly lower (around 72%), though summers are generally muggy, with daily humidity often exceeding 60% and reaching oppressive levels. https://weatherspark.com/y/147082/Average-Weather-at-Virginia-Beach-Oceana-Naval-Air-Station;-Virginia;-United-States-Year-Round
Health Issues Related to Mold
It is not uncommon to be allergic to mold, as it affects approximately 3% – 10% of the population. Up to 80% of people with asthma may be affected by mold and may experience symptoms like hay fever, sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and rashes. People with respiratory issues or weakened immune systems may face risks of serious lung infections and inflammation. https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/mold/health-problems/index.html
How to Prevent Mold in Hampton Roads Homes
The elimination of water intrusion through proper ventilation, and moisture control is the key to prevention. Never leave your home without heat or air conditioning for any length of time. Dehumidifiers can be extremely helpful. Do not be surprised if you need more than one and be prepared to empty the chambers at least daily. During rainy periods, they may need to be emptied multiple times a day.
